赵昌徳厂长收 TO MR.ZHAO
2025 - ongoing
To Mr. Zhao revolves around the artist’s grandfather, Zhao Changde, and everyday archives from the 1990s to the 2000s. Anchored within an expansive yet fragile family album, the project combines traditional film photography, hand collage, found photographs & objects and moving image into a multi-media installation. This new reading of the archive is both an act of repairing and piecing together memory and a way to challenge and ask who gets to preserve and narrate history. The viewers are invited to feel intimacy and absence, to sense the malleability and perishability of family images, and to reflect on how their own memories and family stories are constructed.

HANDMADE PHOTOBOOK
This handmade photobook extends the search for family memory and a sense of home in To Mr. Zhao. Beginning with photographs and envelopes kept by my family, I bring together images of my grandfather, Zhao Changde, my relatives and the old house, alongside photographs taken during my return visits. This is where my grandfather lived and my father grew up, but I never lived there myself. As the old house was demolished and the factory redeveloped, the family album became a way into this history. It also raised a question: how can a place I have never lived in become a place I call home?
The book brings these scattered materials into a sequence, allowing connections to emerge as its pages are turned. Its loose-leaf structure keeps the order of photographs open, while different papers give the old and new images distinct tactile qualities. Archival photographs, present-day landscapes and personal writing connect my family’s experiences with my own visits. Making the book has become a way of getting to know my family and understanding my relationship with this place.
